This dissertation is the result of work carried out in the Astrophysics group of the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge U.K. The work described here is all my own, except where clear reference is made to the work by others. The work in here has not been submitted for a degree, diploma or any other qualification at this, or any other, university. This dissertation does not exceed words in length.
